Things people often ask

Common questions about allergy testing, immunotherapy and what to expect.

The questions patients ask us most about allergy testing, immunotherapy and what to expect. Can't find what you're after? Email us or call (03) 6334 3622.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can refer yourself: send us the ASCIA Clinical History Form and we'll contact you within 7 business days. See how self-referral works. If another doctor has referred you, please send their letter too.

How long is the first appointment?

It depends on your history and whether testing is done on the day. We'll let you know how long to allow when we book.

Does skin prick testing hurt?

Not really. It feels like a light scratch. Positive spots can itch for a while, then settle.

Could I react during testing?

Serious reactions are rare. Testing is always done with a doctor on site and emergency treatment ready.

Can my child be tested?

Yes. Skin prick testing can be done at any age, and we see children as well as adults.

My test was positive. Do I have to avoid that food?

Not always. A positive test shows sensitisation, not necessarily allergy. If you eat a food regularly without symptoms, don't stop without talking to us.

Can I get food allergy blood tests online instead?

We don't recommend IgG food tests or other unproven tests. They often lead to cutting out foods you don't need to avoid.

Is immunotherapy a cure?

No, but it's the only treatment that changes how your immune system reacts. Many people need fewer medicines, and the benefit often lasts after treatment ends.

When will immunotherapy start working?

Many people notice a difference within the first year. Keep going for the full 3 years for the benefit to last.

What if I miss an immunotherapy dose?

Call us. Depending on how late it is, your dose may need adjusting, so please don't skip ahead on your own.

Can I have immunotherapy if I'm pregnant?

We don't start immunotherapy during pregnancy. If you become pregnant during treatment, tell us and we'll discuss whether to continue.

Does private health insurance help?

Private health insurance can't cover the gap for GP consultations. For immunotherapy products, cover varies between funds and policies, so please check with your health fund before you start.

Do you test for medicine or insect sting allergy?

Not at this stage. We'll assess your history and refer you to a specialist service for drug allergy testing or venom immunotherapy.

What happens after my appointment?

You leave with a written plan, and your GP gets a report. We'll book a review if you need one.

Ready to find your triggers?

Allergy appointments can't be booked online. Email your completed ASCIA Clinical History Form or call us, and our doctors will review it and contact you within 7 business days.
